A Sports Gear Drop Zone For Families Without A Mudroom

One thing I didn't think about when I bought my house was that someday, there may be piles of sports equipment dropped by the front door after practice. My house doesn't have a mudroom, and therefore the main entrance has become an unruly unloading area for lacrosse sticks, muddy cleats, stinky sports bags, and half-filled water bottles. I'm not the only one with this dilemma; all you have to do is peruse Reddit and you'll see plenty of parents in the same predicament. Luckily, it's pretty easy to incorporate an organized space for all the sports gear chaos.

A natural place for a sports zone is in the garage by the entrance — this way, it's out of sight (and isn't stinking up the entry). That said, if you have the right pieces, the station can go anywhere it that makes sense. Firstly, if you have an open wall space, make use of it. Hooks can hold bags, wall shelves can hold helmets (which may actually look cool on display), and designated baskets can be used for cleats, balls, and water bottles. Add a bench where kids can sit to take off shoes, and you have all the components of a mudroom without having to do a renovation.

Must-have gear for a gear zone

Investing in a few key pieces can make all the difference for sports storage. When you think of hooks, you're probably imagining horizontal rows, but it may make more sense for your family to designate a vertical space on the wall for each kid with their own Multipurpose Portable Hanging Rack. These strips of hooks are perfect for holding pads, helmets, and bags. You can also either separate everyone's balls into their own baskets, or invest in a bungee "ball cage". The Garage Ball Storage Rack is useful because it can be placed on the ground or mounted on a wall to save floor space.

A simple umbrella stand, like the Umbrella Stand Umbrella Holder for Entryway, is a multi-purpose spot for placing sticks, bats, and yes, even umbrellas. As for cleats, you can Keep Your Kids' Shoes Tidy With A Budget-Friendly Dollar Tree DIY, or line up a row of plastic milk crates, in different colors to add some flair, for each kid to toss in sports shoes or muddy gear that needs to be cleaned off.

Finally, it's worth keeping a separate basket right next to the door that's just for cleaning equipment, such as wet wipes and a sports gear deodorizing and sanitizing spray. Encourage kids to spray down and wipe off their own gear right before they put it away, so that everything is fresh and ready to go just in time for the next practice.
