Alternate Spellings That Can Make A Popular Baby Name Look Less Common
Naming a baby comes with a lot of pressure, but the biggest struggle? Deciding on what you like. Sometimes, you fall in love with a name only to realize it's one of the most popular baby names. Do you really want to name your daughter Sophia or your son Aiden when so many babies share the same name?
If you love a popular name, but still want your baby to stand out, do what my mom did with me: change the spelling. My name is Sydni, and I have gotten so many compliments on the spelling with the "i" at the end instead of the traditional "ey." It makes me feel unique to have a unique spelling I don't see everywhere, especially when I meet others who share my name. You can do the same with your own baby by choosing a much less common spelling of a popular name.
Keep in mind, changing the letters of a name will make it distinct on paper, but it will still sound identical on the playground. Many moms are okay with that, as the alternative spelling satisfies their desire for their child's individuality. It could also be as simple as you don't like the way a certain name is spelled. If you ask my mom, she didn't change my name so I would stand out — she just liked how it looked with the "i" at the end. No matter your motivation, many popular names have less common spellings that you can consider for your baby on the way.
Sydney
Let's start with the (in my opinion) best name: Sydni! The most popular spelling is Sydney, like Sydney, Australia, which is ranked No. 348 on the U.S. Social Security Administration's top baby names list in 2025 for girls. To make it look more unique, other spelling options include Sidney, Sydnee, Sydnie, Cydney, Cidney, and Sydni, of course.
Riley
Riley is a gender-neutral name of Irish origin that means "courageous." Spelled like this, the name ranked No. 48 for girls on the SSA's baby name list for 2025 and 208 for boys. For variation, try Rylee, Ryleigh, or Rylie. Each of these landed on the list's top 1,000 names for girls. Additional Riley options include Ryley, Rhiley, Reilley, Railey, Reilly, Rilee, Reiley, and Raleigh.
Elena
Elena, a name that means "bright one" or "light," was ranked No. 42 for girls on the SSA's baby name list for 2025. It's such a beautiful name, and there are a few different ways to spell it. You could go with more popular options like Alana, Alaina, Elaina, or Alayna, or the little less popular option of Alena (ranked No. 707).
Aiden
The possibilities for how to spell Aiden are practically endless. The Irish name means "fiery one" and is ranked No. 62 on the SSA's top baby name list of 2025. Popular, alternative spelling choices include Ayden and Aidan, but there are some more unique spellings out there as well, including Aedan, Aidyn, Aydan, Aydin, Aadyn, Aaden, and Aidon, among others.
Sophia
Sophia and the alternative spelling, Sofia, are both in the top 10 SSA's baby names list for 2025 (ranked Nos. 5 and 9, respectively). The Greek name means "wisdom" and is so pretty. But if you want to think outside the box, other recognized spellings of this name include Sofiah, Sofya, Sofiya, and Sofea.
Dylan
Dylan is a gender-neutral name that means "great tide, "toward the flow," and "son of the sea." The Welsh moniker ranked No. 41 on the SSA's baby name list for boys in 2025 and No. 808 for girls. Alternative spellings on the list include Dilan (No. 805) and Dillon (No. 930). You could also go with Dyllon, Dillen, Dylahn, or Dylin.
Aria
Aria ranked 26th on the SSA's top names list, and it's easy to see why. The short and sweet name has a cool meaning: "lioness" and "noble." Make it unique for your little one by going with the less popular Arya, Ariyah, Ariya, or Ariah. Even rarer alternative spelling options include Aarya, Arria, and Areya.
